Purple Canopy Dreams: A Quick Guide to Growing and Caring for Jacaranda Trees

Jacaranda mimosifolia, such lovely trees, serenade passers-by with their purple-blue flowers that fall, drape over the tree branches and ground below into an eye-popping wonderland. The trees are native to South America, and as exotic ornamental specimens, will thrive in the warm regions of the world.

The trees can very easily turn out to be a focal point specimen in any garden or landscape niche, and with appropriate care, you will be able to enjoy your purple paradise year after year.

Choosing the Correct Location

Since the plant loves sun, selecting a Jacaranda Tree planting site that has full sun, at least 6-8 hours a day, will maximise bloom. One should allow enough space to grow, as mature trees can reach 25 to 50 feet in height with a wide tree crown. Avoid planting them near driveways or sidewalks because their flowers drop a lot and can be messy.

Planting and Soil Needs

The Blue Jacaranda Jacaranda Mimosifolia needs well-drained soil for the establishment of its seedling. Though it is drought resistant after establishment, young plants do not do well when they are continuously very dry; they prefer moderately moist conditions. Rich soils should be avoided as they will tend to cause much vegetative growth and reduce flowering.

Watering, Feeding and Maintenance

Young jacarandas require watering regularly during their first year, especially when the weather is very hot or dry. After establishment, the supply of water should be on an occasional basis during dry spells.

Too much water may cause root rot. Use sparingly in early spring with a low phosphorus fertiliser to promote blooms, as too much fertilising may inhibit flowering.

Over-pruning can cause weak branch structure and fewer flowers. The best time of year for pruning is late winter or early spring. Having a Jacaranda tree in your garden or any other landscape will add more charm to the space.
